Adding Sand? Please Help!

Can I add sand to an already established tank? If so, how do I do this?

I used a lift tube that I had siliconed a funnel on the end. I put it all the way to the bottom and dumped sand in and slowly lifted it up and moved it around the tank. Still got a little clouding but not too bad. I ran quilt batting in my overflow to clean that up.
