View Full Version : Help with Ebo heater!

I bought two 150 Watt Ebo (formerly Ebo-Jager) heaters for my sump.

They looked like my old Visitherm heaters, so I put them in and turned on the juice.

After 30 minutes, I noticed they WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO BE IMMERSED!

1) For those of us with shallow sumps, how are you supposed to use them? The 150 watt heaters are about a foot long.

2) Why are these dumb things supposed to be so great?

3) How far CAN they stick out of the water? The sensor looks like it's at the very tip of the heating coils (on the end), so I don't see why the top couldn't stick out of the water quite a ways as long as the heating coils are submerged.

4) Do you think they're still o.k. as long as I let them dry out for a bit?

yea some of the newer ebo jagger heaters arent fully submersible...tho i dont know why they decided to do that. They've always been great heaters for me, but i've only got the fully submersible ones and i've had one for about 5 years, and 2 others for a year or so. I wouldnt let the thing stick out of water tho to the point where the glass is actually out...i did that once and it got very hot very quick...i mean seriously hot too..to the point where it bunred me pretty bad lol.

If i were you, and i still had the receipt, i'd return it and get one of the submersible ones.

Well, I decided to try putting it in at a 45 degree down-angle. I think the sensor is on the tip by the coils, so I think it should be OK that the top sticks out of the water.

There is about 4" of glass ABOVE where the heating coils stop, so it should be ok to have a 1/2" of the glass out of the water at the very top, right? As long as the coils are submerged?

Mine are not submersible either, but they work just fine fully submersed.

Is it true the sensor is at the bottom by the coils?

When Ebo was bought by (?) one of the larger companies recently and the distribution was increased, I think that is when the statement was added. Even though it was the same unit, there were different legal testing certificates that had to be applied for and bought from each and every country it was sold in, and the red tape was too laborious so they just said it was not submersible. If you ask the question on www.cichlid-forum.com in the 'equipment' section, I am sure you will get the answer better explained, I recall reading about it perhaps 6 months ago on that site. I have 3-4 currently fully submerged for about 6 months!

either way...ehiem is a good brand, yesno? I had an eheim canister filter for like 4 years anyways, and it never had any problems

Ebo-Jagers ARE fully submersible.

That "do not submerge below this point" line is some bureaucratic BS coming from the CSA (the Canadian equivalent of UL).

A number of Hagen Aquaclear powerheads (among other aquarium products) have the same "warning".

I've run both my Ebos and the Aquaclears completely submerged for years and I'm still alive.
