Coral plugs

Many corals come attached to fairly large plugs of hard rock. I have read the name before but it escapes me. I really don't want to attach the large plugs to most live rock I have. Is there any suggestion as to how to cut down this attachment to the corals without damaging the corals and leaving some attachment to the corals? I suppose some type of Home Depot device?
