I am interested in getting a purple firefish for my 75g. Do they do fine as a single fish or do they need to be in a "school"? Does anybody have one of these and what can you tell me about them.

A single firefish would be fine. They don't school when they get older anyway. They are shy and need to be kept in a tank with peaceful fish.

They will push any other firefish, and if in too small a tank, they will kill their rivals of same-or-near-species. Most schooling fish will. And most schooling fish won't school at all unless they're kept in fear of their lives. It's a protective behavior. Fish that school don't 'like' company, and will stop the moment the threat goes away.

They jump. Make sure your top is covered.

pretty easy to keep all around. Prefers meaty foods.

They do jump but I think it's only when severely startled. I had one for over a year with an open top. As Bertoni said, they need to be kept with peaceful species to avoid this.

SHould do fine! Just make your pick, purple, red, or Helfrichi. They can mix without murder, just a little mayhem, but you'll likely rarely see both at the same time.
