Hi all!
I have been searching for a long time for any similar thread, but to no luck.

I have the following problem (or is it a problem?)

I have lots of very tiny white bits floating around in my water and also settling to various surfaces (Mainly the glass from what i can see).
The bits on the glass look like a white dot, approx 1mm, with very fine arms/tenticles/bits all round (kind of fluffy looking).

I have a little live rock with what i beleive is a Triffid on it and smaller ones starting to appear. I know/beleive this to be a pest.
I am thinking this could be the possible source???

I have no inverts other than the normal clean up crew.
Also there is only currently one Fiji Damsel.

Does anyone have any idea what this white stuff could be?

If anyone needs more info i will give what i can.
Thank You

Im afraid i cant get any. I have tried but:
1. They are too small.
2. My camera is not upto the job (i tried macro)

Even under (slight) magnification there is no discernable features other than as described.
Small white dot with (for want of a better word) fingers coming out that seem to make it cling to the glass.
Approx 1mm total diameter.
Lots and lots of them.

When i wipe the glass they are easily removed but the just float around in the water, eventually settling back down.

I recently added an second external filter (used). I cleaned it throughout and noticed had white spots (crusty) all over the inside.
This filter was used previously on a fish only system containing several Lion's.

I wish i could provided pictures, or a better description.

Any educated guess will do???
I can then start investigating to see if i can find similar pictures.

Many Thanks

Do you have a sump or overflow box? Are they growing like crazy in the sump or over flow box?

hot4teacher:
I currently only have external filters, one with inline UV and a hang-on skimmer.

The picture is different to what i have!

Is the picture of a pod?

Thats it!

What is it?

I will do research myself also.

But the main question, are they a problem.?

It's called a "Hydroid". They can become a problem. If I'm not mistaken, the ones you see on your glass are "buds" and they can grow into colonies that look a lot like tiny feather dusters. When in the colony stage, they can pack a pretty potent sting and beat the snot out of nearby corals. I have a few small colonies in crevices of my rock that haven't caused a problem yet, but I plans on digging them out.

Not sure if this is the same thing:

If it is the life cycle sounds kinda cool:)

Now i think i can safely say they have been introduced because of my LR.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

I just need to get rid of them now.

Thank You.
