well a month or so ago i bought some coral on sale, but to be honest it was done on impulse so im not 100% sure what i got. hopefully someone out there can help me out. for the moment though everything seems healthy and growing.

This was sold to me as a type of cup coral. it was a darker blue color however, but has since lighten up:

I bought this one as a montipora species, and it does appear to be a encrusting type:

this last one I have no idea what it is but it is growing, so im glad i didnt doom it:

First one with all the eyes pointing towards the rim of the coral is a Mycedium. 2nd does indeed look to be an encrusitng montipora ( secondary guess would be porites ) and the last one is turbinaria.

Yeah I agree with GMAX. On a side note your montipora (purple) does not look healthy at all. Does it show any polyp extension at all??

thanks for the id's. the purple montipora, if thats what it is, does have polyp extension, especially at night. its a lot more purple in person, just that the pic has a lot of light reflection. however, it did get a little lighter in color since i purchased it. i figure that if it is a montipora i can keep it healthy since i have a larger monitpora cap. at the right end of the tank that is growing wonderfully. what is it that doesnt make it look healthy, and what can i do about it? its about 6-8 inches from the surface, the tank is lit by 4*54W T5 HO bulbs at are suspended 2 1/2 inches from the surface. temp. is at 78F, salinity is at 1.024. all chemical perameter are ideal

From my experience with the purple crusties is they dig loads of flow. The nodules created between polyps are a result of this. Under those conditions you should get some nice PE all day long.

after much research i have concluded that i have a purple porites, not a purple montipora. i know what to do with monitporas, but not porites. now some of the shaded regions of the coral are looking bad. although every looks the same as the pictures above during lights one, at night you can see that the shaded area have no polyp extension and are almost brown when illuminated with a flashlight, while the regions towards the light have polyp extension and is a light purple. what can i do? it is placed roughly six inches from the water's surface, so i figured that it would get plenty of light, or is it getting too much? How would the care of this coral compare with that of monitpora cap.? any help would be greatly appreciated.

one more thing, is the lighting i have for my turbinaria sufficient? it is placed between 13-16 inches from the water's surface.
