I have a 22" snowflake that has taken out 6 smaller fish :fish1:and I really would like to pair him with a suitable tankmate. This guy means business and has even come out of the water and bit my girlfriend and drew blood.
I asked my lfs owner what I could pair him with and he said probably nothing.Once he gets the taste of fish he needs to be housed alone.
My question
Does anyone have a suggestion for a tankmate who could survive with this guy.

You could try putting a yellow striped maroon clown in with him..

As I know those guys they strike with the speed of a snake, and nothing he can fit in his mouth or choke down is going to be safe...this assuming that he won't kill what he doesn't intend to choke down. The only thing that might work is a hefty grouper or snapper.

The grouper or snapper cant be to big the tank is only a 55.

I'd say he's wanting a bigger tank for that fellow. I know they don't move much, but being in cramped space might have something to do with his aggression levels. He doesn't want any competition in what has to be his total territory.

You could try a small undulated trigger.... When he gets too big sell him. That or if they do well together its the perfect excuse to buy a bigger system.... (hint hint)

can i recommend you get rid of the eel. if the fish is jumpoing out of a tank to bite you, i see this as a risk.
Also i have to admit, I've never heard of happening before w/ a snowflake.
Just curiosu-do you have a picture?
that said skip the triggers they will be food too, remember fish have to sleep. but a bigger more robust fish is a great choice, problem is a big fish in a 55 gal is asking for it.
A bigger tank w/ more rockwork will allow fish tankmates to hide out, so i recommend a bigger tank

I have a snowflake attack any fish I put in the tank (dampeira dottyback, tomato clown), but I gave up. I think part of the problem was he seemed very blind.

How bout adding a Voiltan Lionfish. Probably couldn't eat the lion and it would be ok in a 55.

Frank, Her fingers were wiggling a bamboo skewer 1" above the waters surface, hardly the eels fault.
He is,by far, the meanest fish I've ever had. That 3" hawk he got, slim shady, surprised the heck out of me.SS was about as smart as a fish can get.
I am thinking of pairing him with a dwarf lion.

Nice looking eel. What happened to the Banded Eel? I haven't bought one for my 220 b/c of their tendency to get out of the tank. The one I had before would stick its head out of the water 2 inches and escaped several times.

I kept it with a lionfish, and I think that would be a good bet. I don't think many predators will want to swallow the spiny fish. But best bet is to try to upgrade your tank to a larger size if room permits.

man.....my snowfalke is about 22-23" himself.. not same coloration but he is harmless and currently he is housed with a gold striped maroon. When I feed them he never even strikes her even in a frenzy. Seems you got a winner there!

Good luck

how often are you feeding this eel? sounds to me that hes extremely hungry when the food is being offered to him thus provoking a frenzy,in the majority of captive SFE they are do tend to be more on the docile side although as with any fish species there are the exceptions this may be just one of them.i do however suggest feeding your eel more often this may help reduce his aggression levels.to quote this statement(.Once he gets the taste of fish he needs to be housed alone.)this is a very false statement.this eel tasted fish before he got into your tank.this is his natural diet..i have found with all of my fish the better fed the less aggression any of them show towards one another.but he is being kept in a small tank its fine for him alone but to house more species with him i do highly reccommend an upgrade

Snowflakes are crustacean eaters hence the two bony plates in their mouth.
This lfs owner is very very reputable and I trust him.His specialty is marine animals.Never any ich in his tanks.Have received very solid advice over the years.
I don't buy into the fact that snowflakes need a large tank.Room to swim doesn't apply to these guys ,he stays in his pvc 98% of the time.Water quality is the issue, same with lions, water quality people.I would much rather have a small tank with pvc than a large one with live rock.
At 1" per 2 gallons a 24" eel could easily go in a 55.
An eel likes every part of himself concealed and touching something. Here's apic to prove that.http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/mikedonajkowski/b4dr.jpg
