air pump hooked to skimmer?

I was reading some threads on here about people boring out the hole in the pump to pull more air into their skimmer.

How come you can't just hook up an air pump to the skimmer?

well, good question.

cause I happened to have a 160$ airpump doing nothing, and a octopus skimmer that you are probably referring to.

I could give it about 80% of the output without cavitating the pump.

and yes it was plenty effective at increasing bubbles.

but, the pump makes a racket; and the 160$ it costs could no doubt be better spent on a better skimmer.

I dont know about any smaller quieter air pumps, they might not help much in that case.
