Would a 100g fuge benefit a 1500g reef tank??

We are playing with the idea back and forth and have not come up with an answer. The tank is 1500g. We plan to run a regular reef tank, as opposed to a FO system. Would a 100g rubbermaid filled with sand and Cheato benefit, i.e., help with nutrient removwal, or should we focus all of our attention on the skimmer??

every little bit helps. I found a scratched up 240 for sale cheap and thats what I use

i use a 300 gallon rubbermaid tub for my sump. it was about $300. the more water the better.
