View Full Version : Is 90lbs of Live Rock enough for my 72 gallon tank

I can add more, but I was wondering if I needed it right away, or should I wait. I wanted to get some GARF Grunge (Live Sand Activator) and a decent sized clean up crew soon, and figured that would cost about around $150 or so, but if I don't have enough live rock yet I want to know before I add anything to the tank.

I know there is a formula for live rock to gallon ratios, I guess I just didn't want a WALL of rock this time, like I had last time.

I was thinking about going with either Buna or Tonga Branch instead of just Fiji premium live rock, any advantaged or disadvantages?

90lbs is a good starting point, around 1.5lb per gallon would be a good number, also when u start to add corals most come attached to some rock, and this will add to it. I'd stay at 90lb's and leave room for when the corals start going in.

It depends on the rock. 90 lbs of Fla aquacultured stuff is not a lot of rock since it is very dense. 90 lbs of light porous rock like Marshall Island is a lot of rock.

It is 50 lbs of Hawaiian waterfall rock- very light and porous, 30 lbs of Fiji live rock, 10 lbs of Buna Branch, and 10 lbs of Tonga Branch.

That sounds like 100lbs of LR to me ;)

I was estimating the Tonga Branch and Buna Branch, I gave them how much money I wanted to spend each and they weighed accordingly, it would be between 5-10lbs ;-) ( I KNEW someone was going to make a comment ;-))

I have a 72 gal tank. I had #120 in my first set up - this time around I'm going with 80#.

I have heard as long as it is 1-1.5x your tank, you will be ok.

90# is fine. You will probably naturally be adding a little bit by bit as you add corals.

I swapped out some fiji for some marshall island. I think 100lbs of fiji took up as much space as 55lbs of the marshall island.
