View Full Version : Own Mag 9.5, would like something quieter and more efficient

I have a Supreme MagDrive 9.5 pushing about 5.5' up and it has a ball valve on the line diverting excess flow to a refuge.

Does anyone have any tips on quieter pumps that might be more efficient energy-wise?

I am looking at the eheims right now for the same reason....they sounds pretty good....

Yup Eheims are really nice pumps.

Eheim 1260 or 1262? Note the Eheims put up a bit better with head pressure than the Mags.

Very quiet pumps. Can't even tell they're on. Only downside is the goofy almost-metric fitting which require hose clamps :)

The 1262 is a lot stronger than a Mag9. I'd use a 1260 which when used with the typical 3/4" plumbing, has similar flow rate.

The goofy fittings don't have to be used. 3/4" MPT fittings screw right in.

I don't understand how it is a lot stronger, it looks like neither is even close to the 9.5.

The figures above for the Mag is based on 1.5" plumbing which is not what's usually used. The Eheim numbers are based on 3/4" (actually the metric equivilent) plumbing.

Another alternative is the Ocean Runner line of pumps.

Hmmm, I'm running a Mag 9.5 and it's dead silent. Is yours in the sump or external?

The plumbing makes sense why the numbers are different. Hadn't caught that before, thanks!

Mine is in the sump. I've cleaned it multiple times and no dice, my guess is that something is wrong that I cannot fix.

Mags lose a lot of flow due to head loss. Someone tested a 9.5 and a 1262 recently with 4" of 3/4". The 1262 was ~ 800 GPH, the 9.5, ~ 500 GPH.

wow... yeah, I think a 1260 will be what I order, I don't want a mass amount of flow in the refuge

thanks

Make that 4' of 3/4", not 4".
