Any ideas on how to get a longnose out of the overflow section? I still don't know how he got in there.

mine did the same thing but rode all with way down to the basement refusium in 3 inch drain (about 30 feet). he was fine and it took me several weeks to fish him out.
i currently have a firefish in my overflow. he has been there 2 months & seems happy. my brittle star got in the overflow & i was able to get him out with a grabber.
mine has a space a small fish or starfish can go over.

just got him out. i was leaning over the overflow with my fish net and i stuck it down all the way to the bottom. I guess he freaked out, made a beeline for the top, jumped out, hit me in the face, and fell into the tank.
whatever works i guess. ;)

I've placed plastic screening (large squared) on all of my overflows to prevent this very problem. It also helps with keeping food out of the overflow. One tank has it cemented in place, and requires periodic cleaning with a toothbrush. The other tanks simply have the screening looped through the overflow teeth. This gets pulled and cleaned as well.
Just make sure that the screen is slightly shorther than the tines (teeth) in your overflow. That way if something clogs, the water can still get into the return.
I like the flying hawk fish story! Glad he landed on the wet side of the tank.
