Today I purchased some pine for my canopy (cheap)
I was wondering what can I use for a sealant for the inside. I am looking for something that seals the mositure out and is white.
Please help!

I used Kilz.

Kilz is a primer won't seal moisture real well... White oil based exterior paint woulbd be better if you're going to paint it. Personally I'd stain and ployurethane it just like the outside and install some appropriate reflectors.

I would do anything to make it easy to clean when needed. I used white oil based paint on mine.

i just spent a couple of hours painting my new modified canopy white kilz in the inside and stain on the out. i thought white was to help out a little on the lighting?

I'm not sure I understand the whole Kilz thing, are you just priming and not painting? I guess if thats what you had laying around it would be fine. I'd rather use an oil based exterior white if I were to paint the inside of a canopy again. Better durability...

I've painted the inside of mine in the past but it was mostly covered by the reflector. I didn't see I was gaining much, your setup could be different and it may be beneficial.

kilz is a good first layer. but your going to want any white oil based paint for the inside.

According to thier website, Kilz is a good primer/sealer....http://www.kilz.com/pages/default.aspx?NavID=23.

oh well, maybe i can still get a layer of oil based white paint to finish it. if not then no harm done.

I did 2 coats of kilz primer and a couple coats of marine white enamel inside my canopy and my stand on my 90. Its holding up great and stuff wipes right off. Reflects light in the canopy back into the water a little too. I did mine in gloss but I thought I read that a flat finish works better for light reflection???? I also ran a smooth bead of paintable silicone caulk in all the seams before painting to seal all possible areas moisture could get into.

For me,I used a water based paint to paint my diy canopy.I chose this paint because I thought there is a possibility of interaction between the aquarium water and the paint of my canopy and I had learnt that this paint is less destructive chemically for the water quality if it mixes with it.But I have noticed that it smells a bit when I open the canopy to feed my fish.Does this happen with the oil based paint, too?

I've done the inside of two canopies (a 90g and a 150g) with white TileClad from Sherwin Williams. It is a two-part epoxy and has a limited pot life but cures out almost indestructable. Bright white and designed to be waterproof.
