Hey guys, I wanted to get some info. reguarding the reef safeness of a bluethroat trigger(male). I saw a 2.5" male for sale at my local lfs and was tempted to buy him on the spot. I've heard mixed opinions on wether or not they are destructive to reefs. I have a mixed reef. I am not so worried about shrimps and crabs as much as corals. I've heard xenia and zoas may be targeted by them but sps aren't a target. I have a blue hippo, fox face, small clown and a royal gramma in my custom 77gal. This would be my last addition until my 180 is complete (which should be a couple months).
Any info would be appreciated. Also is $55 a decent price for the fish?
Thanks,

Mine never touched a coral. Ocassionally picked at a snail, but never killed one.

Well, I called today and found out he was collected in the INDO pacific.
What makes the HAW better? are we talking coloration or behavior?
Should I still get him?
Thanks

i dont know what makes them better to be honest, but hawi. are always more money and marinecenter.com says that they are a better speciment. I could be color because pictures look better on hawi fish but i would be lying if i said i knew for sure. i do know of people with the indo ones and they do fine in there tanks, but every fish is different.

Hawaii bluethroats have a brighter yellow outline and a better blue jaw (more defined and brighter) I've seen the bali ones next to a Haw. one and there is a clear difference (in my eyes anyway)
also ones from Hawaii are guarenteed to be collected with hand nets (or as my friend does it by bare hand.. lol) and not roughed up (usually).

Okay, i bought him and he looks really healthy. I put him in shortly after my MH'S went off, so I haven't noticed any behavior yet. I'll be updating.
I will try to get digital pics pf him up soon.

He is a juvenille approx. 2-3", with prominent yellow outlines and an up-and-coming bluethroat. Mainly silver though.

I have a male/female pair in my reef and they are great. They are pigs. Keep 'em fed and they are good

mine ate my chromises, and tried to eat my clown. But never touched anything else. He was pretty large when I got him at about 6-7 inches.
