Retrofit Kits?

I'm not sure I understand lighting retrofit kits. What are they for?

I'm building my first tank. Would I use a retrofit kit for anything, or are they just for updating other fixtures? If so, what kind of update is it? New lamps? New ballasts? Better? Safer? DIY?

Retrofit kits are meant to be installed in an existing canopy. They are somehow DIY since you have to install the end caps, bulbs, reflectores, ballasts and of course do the cabling. If you don't have or plan to get a canopy you are better off getting a fixture ready to use. Retrofits are also good for upgrading your current lighting.
