Ive got a 58 gallon tank that the center brace had been overheated at some point and is trashed. Is it possible to just silicone a chunk of glass across the tank to fix this problem? I was looking at another tank and it appears that is all that was done from the factory? The 58 has a plastic trim piece that is one piece all the way around the top, it is not mitered at the corners, unsure of manufacturer. Thanks for your help!

That piece theoretically prevents the front glass from bowing (and eventually breaking). I am not sure it does that job. To cover all possibilities, I would recommend attaching something that may do the same thing...like a piece of plastic epoxied and screwed to the rim...so you don't cause a bigger problem later.

most manufacturers sell an OEM rim, you can just change them out with a little work.
