oK- I figured I'd start a thread devoted to this since the idea seems to be taking off and I'm sick of looking around for info on them :-). I Just made my first one and the results are so amazing I almost crapped myself. I used some very porous black filter pad that I got at lowes used for pond filters and ziptied it to the bottom half of a Gen-X needlewheel impeller and stuck in back into the pump and I am currently pulling 8LPM (480LPH) with under about 10" of water. How about everyone who has worked with this stuff post their results with different pumps, material used and where the material was aquired.

Which Gen x did you put it on? What does the material look like?

It's on a Gen-X 1500 and now it seems to have leveled off at 6LPM or 360LPH. Still pretty good for that pump! The stuff is more like wirey sort of foam pad. It's about 1" thick and is used in outdoor pond filter boxes. it comes in a pack of 2, one blue pad that looks like regular foam filter pad and then this one. It looks very similar to what you guys are using but I think yours is a bit sturdier and a tad more pourus....

Great idea! I have a few NW pumps I would like to try this on. An OR2700 and a Reef Octopus RPS 2000.

Here is a cool link on the building of the thread wheels:

Yeah I saw that one. The gen-X 1500 I mentioned at the beginning of this thread is pulling a solid 7-8 LPM now. Thats 420- 480 LPH out of a 1500- Pretty damn good if you ask me....

how many watts is your genx 1500 pulling?

do you think the variance in LPH is due to shifting of the meshwheel? I've wondered if difference materials are stable.

Does anyone have experience as to how fast these thread wheels get packed full of dirt?
Since the design looks like a coarse filter. Seems like it may plug up quickly.

Would this type of meshwheel be beneficial for a sedra 9000 pump on a asm g4x?

Do you think a maxijet could be modded this way to help out those low end hangon skimmers for folks with smaller tanks!
