Why does my Carpet do this?

I always wondered why my blue Haddoni never folds when the lights are on. Why does it do this?

I think b/c it is close to the glass. But not really sure.

Its not that because when the lights go out my carpet folds but its when the lights are on my carpet does this. But thanks for the input anyways.

Maybe it's just "it's" personality. It looks like it's happy. I have seen some trumpet like that. No worries.

Thats what I am thinking too. It has plenty of light, it is REALLY sticky and gets fed quite often because I spoil my anemones. :)

Ron Schimek states in his book 'Anemone Secrets' that it's a very common phenomenon in the wild. Apparently they do this at night to optimise their chances of catching something.

my red one does the same thing. it doesn't have folds like my other carpet. instead it flattens out like a pancake.

Mine funnels like that sometimes. Sometimes its flat as a pancake and other times its does the saddle shape.. who knows why. :)

Yeah I think its just a personality thing now. I just wish it would fold. It looks cooler imo. Oh well, its still a beautiful anemone.

I've seen many pictures of this particular anemone. (It's beautiful, BTW.)
I've noticed a couple of things about it:
*it's still smallish in size. It will undoubtedly develop folds as it grows.
*look where it's located. It's foot is anchored against the corner glass. It appears to be searching for more light. Or food. Or both.
*check for oxygen saturation levels. Anemones will take on this appearance in aquariums that have low levels of oxygen.

Its not to big yet but it is growing and is very healthy. Its foot is really close to the front panel of the glass. The foot is attached to the bottom of the tank but really close to the front. It gets plenty of food. I spoil it.:) The light isn't an issue either. T5 Tek lighting with individual reflectors 4x54 watts is plenty of light. Right now I am keeping sps and a Crocea clam with no problem, which are more light demanding than Haddonis.

It could be an oxygen issue. When you say low levels of oxygen, do you mean low levels of dissolved oxygen? How could I increase this? I have one return line coming from my sump and several other powerheads in the tank for more flow. If I were to switch out the return line pump to a stronger one, would that increase the dissolved oxygen in the tank? I was planning on doing this soon anyways because I want more flow. Now that I think about it, I think oxygen could very well be a reason.

A big skimmer is one of the best ways to oxygenate a reef aquarium. It also has added benefits. :)

A bigger skimmer eh? I do have a pretty crapy skimmer. Its a Red Sea Prizm Dlx.

But what about the powerhead upgrade? Would that also help?

Well Gary, I upgraded my protein skimmer to a much better one and I also upgraded my pump in my sump. My tank is already looking better. :)

Well there is definately more flow in the tank and now my carpet isn't stretching up anymore. So I guess so far so good. I also feel better about my tank now that I have more flow and a better protein skimmer.

What did you buy for a skimmer / pump 55semireef? Just curious.. I'm looking at getting a 90aga with sump. I'm going back and forth between Eheim and a Mag.

Hmmmm...the pump is a mag that pumps 750 gallons per hour I think and I am not to sure what kind the skimmer is. :rolleyes:

I know the skimmer is doing a much better job and its rated up to 75 gallons. Its doing a way better job than my old przm.

Did you get an in-sump skimmer or another HOB? What type of pump is running the skimmer?

My carpet when I had it did that for around a week, I had high P04, due to overfeeding and a broke down skimmer. I fixed the problem, and he went back to normal, but that was about the only thing I can come to conclusion.

Its an in-sump skimmer. I will check to see what type of pump is running it soon.

The pump that is running the skimmer is a Maxi-jet 1200. It gets about 342 gallons per hour.


Like I said earlier, ever since the upgrade of the skimmer and the new pump, my carpet has yet to strectch out his/her column. Now it partly looks like a pancake with folds.
