View Full Version : Naso Kole - stocked?

Hey guys, so I think that with a Naso and a Kole in a 240g (long) tank I'm pretty well stocked. hah hah. I know some of you will think I am crazy, but I am planning for my naso's full size (yes eventually we will switch up to an even bigger tank, but just in case I don't want to kill my bioload later).

So I am wondering two things...do you guys think I could accomodate a Scopas tang with my two guys that I have already (thinking about once they are all full size)?

Second, is the Scopas Tang an aggressive tang (in general)? At the moment my guys are very peaceful so I am thinking not to disturb this balance.

There's a guy nearby who needs to give up a Scopas that's getting big, so that's why I am asking these questions.

Any tang in the Zebrasoma family can become beligerant in aquarium confines to other fish of similar size and/or shape.
Your current tangs are both generally mild mannered and you may not have any major issues since the scopas is being added last. I had a small Naso with a Purple Tang and they fought for about a week but eventually settled in and did fine. If your Naso is considerably larger than the Scopas you may not have any issues at all.

My Naso is pretty big...at least 7 or 8 inches, while the Scopas is supposed to be about 5-6". So Scopas would definitely be smaller than Priscilla (my naso).

But here's another important question...can I add other types of fish...like gobies and non-tang kinds of things? I'm thinking of jawfish, blennies, gobies and the like. My naso has no problem at all with other fish being added. She accepted that Kole tang right away too. But the Scopas is so similar to a yellow tang and I had a nightmare one of those once...so I am naturally very skeptical of those types of tangs.

I would say that you would be ok adding smaller unrelated fish but there is always a chance that the scopas is just down right mean and could be aggressive toward any fish in the tank.
I currently keep a small school of 4 purple tangs in the tank and they only fish they harass are each other. I have several small fish like a red sea mimic blenny, lyretail anthias, Pearly Jawfish, Watchman goby, several fairy wrasses, and a couple of angels and the tangs do not bother any of these fish.
Having a large amount of rock will help with agression as it will provide places for fish to hide if threatened.

The guys says that this one is not mean towards his clowns and other fish, but I know things can change when a fish goes into a new tank.

I'm just very leery of upsetting my nice balance that I have right now, ya know?

I do have lots of rock (I keep thinking I have too much actually), so that would help, but I really don't want to make my tank a place where fish would need to hide in the rocks.

Thanks for your help I really appreciate it! Maybe someone else will chime while I am thinking about it.

i think you could probably do it. Make sure and add him at night that would help some. Of course they will fight for a little bit while they establish their chain of command.

Actually...I think I am going to pass on him. I don't want to risk any aggression of any kind. I've got such a peaceful tank at the moment, with a relatively low bioload...so why mess with that? I tell people on here all the time...why mess up a good thing, ya know?

Thanks for the help guys!
