72 gallons wont work for a crosshatch. in fact, many triggers grown very very large, so you will probably be very limted. Maybe a niger, but that is a weak maybe, as they get big too. bluethroat is good, but look into sragassums also- they stay smaller, i believe, and would be reef safe(r).

I have a bluethroat in my reef. He doesn't touch anything, not even my tiny little Sexy Shrimps.

I had a reef safe Pink Tail Trigger for about 1 year and he was very docile. But then he got a taste for my inverts and he totally wiped them out. He depleted my cleaner crew, snails, crabs, and starfish. I had about 4 serpent star fish and 2 bristtle star fish and he took chunks off them. I did not know he was the one eating my crew until I heard a loud crunch coming from the aquarium and lo' and behold the creep had taken a large bit off a serpent starfish's body, let alone the bits he had taken from its legs. I was able to trade him off and I managed to restock my cleaner crew. No incidents or depletions since the Pink Tail Trigger moved out. I loved him and his colors but my reef took a beating.

Liveaquaria has some right now on their "collectors corner" page and Marinecenter has then on their list though availability is sporadic. I have only seen one once at an LFS.

In general they aren't quite as hardy as the other Xanthichthys triggers, but they aren't what most people would consider difficult. The biggest problem is that they can develop masses in their jaws which stop them from eating. It's unclear if these are cancerous type tumors, or infections, but either way most people are not able to successfully treat them. I don't know of any way to predict which ones will get that or how to prevent them.

I'd really like a sargassum trigger, but so scared of getting a potentially aggressive fish.... :(

Have had a sargasm trigger on two occasions and they were model citizens. I would recommend them as reef safe triggers, they are very active feeders at the surface and shy fish might not get oll the food they need with a sargasm in the tank. but if you stock with like minded eaters then no problem.

so will sargassums still go after your ornamental shrimp?

Sargassum all the way. Mine is more of a vegetarian anyway. He plays tug of war with my rabbitfish over nori. It's amazing how much he can fit in his mouth! He's very social and always swimming around. Doesn't bother any corals or the shrimp, crabs, or snails. I got mine from LiveAquaria.com. It was half the price of the LFS.
