I was wondering if I can add a male, and female blue throat trigger to my tank.

I have 220 Gallon reef tank

1-powder blue tang
1-yellow tang.
1-rock beauty
5-chromis
1-bleny
1-goby
2-cleaner shrimp
1-pistol shrimp

When i added my chromis my powder blue chased them for a few days. Then he left them alone.

I would get a pair. When I had only my male he was very timid and I hardly ever saw him. As soon as I added my female he was out and active within a few days. Now they are my favorite fish.

i'm pretty sure with the triggers you'll lose your shrimp. a few triggers are coral safe, but none, as far as i've read, are shrimp safe, except perhaps the crosshatch.

The Blue jaw/throat and Crosshatch are very closely related.

I am thinking about trying to add a pair of cleaner shrimp to my tank. If they end up being an expensive snack I will let everyone know. The plan is to feed all of the fish very heavily so they are not interested in eating, then adding the shrimp right after the lights go out. I will also do it on a weekend so I can feed the tank as soon as the lights come on to give the shrimp a little more time to get settled and establish a "cleaning station"

Go for it. These fish will be a great addition to your tank.

I've added cleaner shrimp after I had my blue throat in the tank. He didn't give them a second look as the shrimp swam to the rock. Mine has been a model citizen but is really a pig.

That is good to now.
The only thing my cleaner shrimps hides under a rock during the day. They come out at night, and when I am feeding.
They are not doing there job....SO they might get fired.

Please keep post updated on how this works out. I am also planning to add a blue throat to my tank but have been hesitant due to the possibility of losing my cleaning crew.

with those of you who have kept them - shrimp aside did they mess with crabs or snails?

My Bluethroat has been a model citizen in my reef tank for about 3 months. I have a few cleaner shrimp and the trigger doesnt even give them a second look as loup said. Mine definately is a pig also and not exactly shy...I have one female and she is out and about the tank as much as any other fish in the tank. I do hear the occasional crunch from an unwary Stomatella snail "Stomatella varia", which is good in my case because my tank is loaded with these snails and they breed like rabbits.

I have a crosshatch in my 240, and while it doesn't bother cleaner shrimp or corals, it'll eat chromis. I had 5 small chromis in there, and it ate them one by one.

My bluethroat is in with 3 Tangs. They are very nice fish and mine now swims around the tank all the time. He's one of the coolest guys in the tank, IMO.

Fish list:

4x Yellow Stripe Cardinalfish
3x Blue/Green Chromis
1x Threadfin Angelfish
1x Ocel. Clownfish
1x Magnificent Foxface
1x Orange Spot Rabbitfish
1x Bluethroat Trigger
1x Purple Tang
1x Redsea Sailfin Tang
1x Atlantic Blue Tang
1x Lawnmower Blenny
1x Mandarin Dragonet (Female)

I also have 11 shrimp
3x Skunk Cleaner Shrimp
2x Fireshrimp
3x Peppermint Shrimp
3x Sexy Shrimp

He hasn't shown any interest in any of them.

Getting them to used to the tank and eating takes some practice though. Mine wouldn't eat for a week to start with.

My trigger was very shy for a month at least. Now he's always out and about the aquarium. He's like a vacuum during feeding. For about 2 months he never touched my peppermint shrimp. Then *poof*, shrimp is gone. Now Im starting to find legs of hermit crabs strewn about the tank :) Im not sure if he's trying to tell me he's hungry or what :)

Awesome fish though, well worth the price of the hermit crabs imo :)
