Standpipe HELP

I just installed a Standpipe I purchased in my overflow to quite the tank down. Now I am getting burst of air in the sump. It sounds like a toilet flushing. I am using PVC going into the sump and it is at least 1 to 2 inch under the water. I installed the tube on top of the Standpipe and left the rest of the tubing out of the water. Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong?

is it a durso pipe? if so, did you drill the little hole in the top cap?
