Acrylic Rod Substitute? Snow Pole from HD?

I didnt have time to drive all over looking for acrylic rod for aquascaping but I did find these snow poles at HD that seem like they would do they job. I cut one a few times and noticed a rather strong smell, maybe petroleum? Does anyone know if these would be safe in a reef environment? It looks like painted fiberglass rod to me. Anyone know for sure one way or another?

? If something doesn't feel right to you , than you shouldn't use it. Take the time and get the acrylic rods. You know they will work for sure. plus coraline will grow quickly on the acrylic.
