Hii All - I'm looking to get a new protien skimmer. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was looking at the Prism. I have a 65 gallon system 2 tank. My current protien skimmer is an old one that came with the tank.

If your budget allows, H&S 110-F2000 would be a sure thing if you are looking for an in-sump model.

Don't waste your money on the prism. JMO I had one of these and its horrible. Very tempermental, pain cause you have to constantly adjust.

I would need a HOB? I have a System II filtertration. I want a really good one. The one I have is a venturi style but it only has a regular power head that sucks air from a tube and mixes it into a cylinder inside the filtration. It doesn't have a special impeller.

Hi there bderos,

I prefer the H&S units, they have internal and external units and these skimmers are one of the best IMO.I say this because when you look at construction, quality, performance and price gives the H&S models a edge over other needle wheel skimmers. There many other good models out there but I prefer H&S.

If you can only use a HOB well then there is only one that I could say is great and thats the Deltec HOB units like the mce600 ect, they are great units for hobbiest do not have a sump.

I have a prizm pro delux model. I spent just under 200 dollars on it taking the advise of the sales rep. I must point out that it is tempermental in that it has to be adjusted about twice a week. However it is versatile in that you can have it in or out of your sump. Also I like that it has a chamber for carbon or other media, and that is the only place I put carbon for my 90 gl. The other factor I looked at was that with my cabinet I could only get a skimmer 21 1/2" tall or shorter. The prizm was the only one to foot the bill that was even half descent. It does do a good job skimming and is also very quiet.

Avoid the prism skimmer at all costs.
All the other skimmers mentioned are great, I personally own a Euro Reef and am very happy with it.

I own an ER too. Works great. I agree that the H&S is excellent, but costs more. I think the best bang for the buck is truly an Octopus NW150. Awesome price and I am extremely shocked at the quality of materials used on this skimmer. The pump is also raved as one of the more reliable units out there. I have not owned one of them, but have seen one in use on a 500+ gallon LR system and it rocks. I have also inspected several models they are built very well and use better materials than ASM. It is quiet to boot.

Extremely difficult to pass up for the dough. They do make a HOB model, but not sure how they perform.
This is the NW150
