what is a good and sofe way to clean my ro/di unit? I will be installing new cartridges and membrane. It has been sitting idle for several months with old water in it.

Most of the RO vendors have instructions on their websites on how to disinfect the housings with unscented household bleach. Directions vary but I remove all the filters, add several tablespoonfulls of bleach to the first housing, reassemble the housings, remove the line from the last carbon up to the membrane and let it run until it fills everything up. I let it sit for a few minutes and then flush it some more until there is no bleach smell. Reinstall the filters, connect back to the membrane and go.
There are variations of this method but they all accomplish the same thing. If you are concerned about the membrane you can remove it from the housing and do all the housings at the same time, just make sure there is no bleach left or it can destroy the membrane.
