Heard sometimes they eat Coralline algae? Reasons why you would not keep them? Thanks.

Good for FOWLR

Bad for FOWLR

I've never seen mine (ar anyone elses) eat coralline. I'm not sure they're even equipped properly to do so with any great success. Either way, they're reef safe (with a little caution) so they're definitely fine for FOWLR.

Is it common for so many people looking but nobody votes? Are they alot of lurkers on this site?

Just curious because I am a member of Mustang and Scuba Diving forums and it is not like that there???

Thanks.

I have one in my reef tank. I think if they don't have enough food they may bother corals. I have never had a problem with mine.

I don't know about in a FOWLR tank, but in my reef tank my emerald crabs are great. I have a larger one, and several others (I'm planning on getting many more), and the larger one is kind of aggressive at times if someone comes near his algae that he's munching on, he doesn't pinch, more like punches with one of this back legs.

They can be aggressive to smaller fish, but I love them.

Would most likely be ok in FOLWR. I don't like them in my reef. After a couple of months mine thought the best place to get shade was to hang by his pinchers up under my green leather. during feeding he would hang by one and grab food with the other. I relocated him in the tank a couple of times but within a couple of hours he was back. Now resides in my fuge.

I have 5 in my reef and 2 in my nano. I've seen them eat some of the coralline but not to a significant extent i.e. the coralline grows faster than they eat it. They cleaned up my red hair algae but surprisingly have not done much with the couple of small bubble algae balls that are present.

I have one in my FOWLR. Its nice cause i never see bubble algae. And for the most part they do not eat coralline. Although, being a crab they will eat just about anything if they're hungry enough.

If you don't have corals they're fine. I will NEVER again put one in my reef tank after catching the one I USED to have nibbling my Sun Polyps.

To know if good for a FOWLR or bad, one would need to know what kind of fish are in there with it. In my FOWLR I would be more afraid for the crab's life than anything else. My trigger and puffer would love that kind of snack.
