I run an external skimmer and I've had the problem where my return pump doesn't restart after a power outage and my skimmer pump does and with the higher volume of water in the sump causes the skimmer to overflow and water all over the carpet...no one happy. I do have everything on a UPS, but that runs out sometimes too.

My solution was to take an extension cord, a DPDT relay, a plastic project box and a pushbutton and wire it up such that the button needs to be pressed to energize the outlet and when power is removed and reapplied, it doesn't re-energize the outlet.

Essentially a contact is wired in parrel with the pushbutton and that is in series with the coil. When the push button is pressed and let go, the contact seals in the coil. The other contact is used to run your equipment--in this case the skimmer pump. Better would be to use a 3PST or 3PDT relay, but this works.

Here's what I used in it--what I had laying around:

Also used an extension cord for the plug and outlet part.

I can post a pic of the final project tomorrow evening if there is any interest.
