I bought a used tank and stand (125 gallons 72x18x20). I rebuilt the stand so I can install a 55 gallon sump. The stand is all 2x4 construction. There was not a solid top installed when I got the stand. I have since installed a 3/4 inch top and with the top and front railing I would need to use a 1x6 piece of molding to cover the top seam and the seam where the front panel is. I was wanting to know what the negative affects of removing the top so I can use a 1x4 piece to trim. The panels are all 3x4 inch and the stand is full 2x4 including lateral braces.

Glass tank? Then it is not a problem, the tank is supported by the edges. As long as the lateral bracing is sufficient to keep the stand from twisting you will be fine.

Yes, it is a glass tank, Oceanic. I guess the only difference if I used the top would be I would need 1x6 versus 1x4 trim around the top edging.

The top piece of plywood ties the 4 sides together which prevents it from racking. As Bean said, if you dont use it, you need to be certain something else is bracing it.
