View Full Version : Yellow Tail issue: Accident or disease?

(I originally posted this to another forum but I'm needing help now in case it's a disease.)

I've had my two yellow tail damsels for about a year and a half with no issues. I have not introduced anything new to the tank in as long except that I did move about a month ago with no issues.

Today out of the blue, I noticed that the alpha damsel has his right eye "split open" along the top and rear behind the eye - where most of his eye seems to be detached from his head but not really. In the place of the dettachment is a white slit. I have several new fish waiting in quarantine before I add them to this main tank and I do not want to add them until I know that this was only an incident and not some type of disease. This fish now is pretty tame and hides in the reef as opposed to normally swimming all over. I do have one hidden crab somewhere in the tank who snaps every so often (no, not a mantis shrimp) so perhaps the damsel finally got too close to him?

Attached are the two best pics of his eye that I could get tonight. Accident or disease? Can you help me? (Click on each pic for a close up.)
