It looks rather unstable to me.
Did you do anything to seal the wood?

Perhaps ask the friendly people at Home Depot for advice.

staticx

nothing to seal the wood yet that is not how it is that is just the basic layout would be funny though if i put it up lookin like that

I still think it looks unstable you have a unique sense of humor what will you use to seal the wood are you going to have any cross braces between the blocks maybe you should find a new job and consider using punctation now and then just some advice but that is what you asked for right

I'm afraid you missed my point. Turn your head ninety degrees upwards, and you'll see the trail it left behind.

I think you should search more for pictures and threads of other's cinder block stands. Yours looks like it would fall with any lateral pressure.

Good Luck.

Looks fine to me .Although since your gonna frame it in you defeat the purpose of using block . Usaually those that use block use just that block and top support.

Frequent I see block sides and a 2x4 or 4x4 framed top with the middle open.

Are you using a glass tank with trim?

staticx

acrylic tank

No good...... support that plywood 100% which means making a frame under it.

staticx
11/13/2006, 01:43 AM
could you define that for me

clkwrk
11/13/2006, 01:49 AM
Make the top like you would if you were building the whole thing out wood.

or run at least two 2x4's standing upright the length of the plywood . Three would be better . Basically it would look like rafters or floor joists and your plywood is secured to those 2x4.

Here is the top for my tank mius the cross supports. Just a square with plywood fastened to it .

These guys are all full of it, all you need is a stack of cinderblocks in the middle. The ones on each end are just over kill. I would just return the extra glued together cinder blocks to homedepot.

Really if you two don't have anything constructive to say then you shouldn't be posting in this thread .

Wow the home depot thread took on a life of its own!!!
So I got the stand all figured out, Looks good thanks for all the support. Never knew me being a idiot at home depot would have such an effect on people. I wonder if it makes people feel tough to call people names on the internet. Oh well I think I will print out the home depot thread and frame it. I have asked dozens of questions on here and never had a 2 page reply. Should be interesting to see how big it gets.

Wait a minute now I'm confused. Could you please extrapolate on the yourmom part as your occupation?

Hey staticx, your stand looks like it would work out pretty well. It's not a real looker (if you know what I mean). However, I am fairly sure it can hold a few hundred pounds worth of water. Don't worry about the top flexing in the middle. It's fairly normal for an unsupported top to have some give in the middle. I think it will be just fine.

As for a final check, I would just recommend that you get that beauty in place and then fill it up with water (completely full) just to be sure that it will support the weight of your new set up. You may also want to think about doing a kick test too. You know, kick it a few times - or take a sledge to it, just to make sure those blocks don't shift. I mean sinder blocks carry heavy loads and they are used to build some large structures. They should be pretty secure, and I don't really think you need to worry about using any mortar or adhesive.

Cany you post some pictures of it when your done, as there seems to be some speculation here about it standing up (and not falling apart).

Is that pine? I think it might crack under pressure. I hope you treated it with something to keep it water resistant.

It actally looks like the jointed pine they sell, I would definately return that and buy a sheet of 3/4 ply. You should be able to get a full sheet cut to at least 4 pieces. Then use 3 for the top 2 1/4" and then one for the bottom, as long as you make sure its level it will be fine. Better yet, keep the extra wood build a canopy with it and gain a little dignity.

You were probably trying to save some cash. I used to have cinder block shelves in my room when I was a kid...

Sorry about all the crap you've gotten on here. I've never gotten anything but help, I can't imagine how I'd feel about this site if I were you.

Good luck on your project!
