I decided to setup another tank at my office. I wanted it to look different than my 55g. Sooo... now to my question: Any pictures of black sand reef tanks out there? I think it would look pretty kool, but, wantedto see if anyone else has done it. Thanks

only problem is that the black color of the sand absorbs the light, and does not reflect it back into the reef structure

I hear Black Sand is like Lava Rocks. May not be good for the Marine Hobby. JD

Could you please extrapolate on the lava rock being bad for the reef. Its the first I have heard of it.

I never thought of that. Does the lighter colored substrate really reflect enough to make a big difference? You have me looking into my tank now seeing if there is a diff.

Black sand looks super cool when you first set up the tank but in a short amount of time it becomes super ugly because you cant keep it clean.

Not mine i used seachems grey coast, Its not really black, But a charcoal grey. I love it! I have had moonsand tanks before and it was right, I did see tons of poop and crud on the sand, But the seachems dont show as much.
Send seachem a pm and ask them to mail ya a sample. Not many stores carry it, But i am glad i got it!
See if i can dig a pic up for ya.

Here ya go, One more thing this is agagonite, and coarser than southdown. Sand stirrers keep the sand looking good. Just as good as my white sand looked.

i have the grey coast also and its a very nice change from the white. it stays very clean for me from the setup. 3 mj 1200 2 mj900. 3 tiger tails and 40 nasarius. skimmin wet. note i would only go ssb with it due to its size and random shapes, and wait about 6 months to add the snails. my corals dont seem to care what collor the sand is.
