How deep of a sandbed does an engineer goby need, does it need a courser substrate as well?

The deeper the better. I had one in my 75 with 6 inch sandbed and he dug right to the bottom under my largest pice of liverock. Make sure your liverock is stable because they will cause problems down the road. I ended up bringing him back to the lfs after 8 months because he was causing problems with my liverock structure..

I have 4 in my 560g w/2" sand bed they are just swimming around having a good time being great tank mates.

I have one in my tank with about 4" of sand. I have a screen in the middle of the sand bed. This keeps him from dig past the screen. The LR in stable resting on the screen.

Mine has gone through just about all the sand in the tank, covering corals and generally making a mess of things, but I wouldn't trade him in for anything! I too say, no matter how deep, they will find the bottom, and as for coarse-ness, I would think finer is better for them, ....

I am probably only going to have a 2" sand bed in a 75g. How big do they get? Do you think that would be enough for one?

one would be good, but they do like to be in pairs/groups

engineer gobies get to be like 8-10 inches long

I have one for 2 years now, good thing I have all my rocks on the glass, because he took all the sand out. He is about 10 inches long and alwayes hungry.

what do you feed him since he is that big now?

He gets leftover food in the tank and I hand feed him 1/4 of small shrimp twice a week.
