heres what I'm after, I have a 2 sided viewing tank 8 feet long.its split with a mountain of liverock. I need flow on bother sides of this mountain and I would like a tidal effect. [one side then reverse] guess I'll need,,,
4 x vortechs and a controller? I want 2 of the vortechs oppossing each other on each side of my rock structure.
can the controller do this?? or will I need 2 controllers?
1 controller for 2 and another for the other 2??

For a 500 gallon I would recommend four VorTech pumps. I'd put two pumps on each of the short (non-viewing) sides. Until our controller comes out, I'd recommend alternating the pumps with 10 min on 10 min off alternating between the two sides of the tank. Once the controller is out you'll be able to do waves, counter current flows, etc.

Hey Tim, not to hijack the thread but my question is along the same lines.
I'm cycling my 345 at the moment, 96 X 30 X30. I have 2 vortechs that will be going on it to start out. My rock setup will be similar to what Sanjay has done in his thread in the large tank forum =http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=730564&perpage=25&pagenumber=28. I designed the tank for the vortechs, I'm only running 2 X 1262 eheims as returns and the vortechs will do the rest of the flow work. Mixed reef mostly sps. =http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=971091
What would your recommendations be for this setup?
BTW If needed, I'd be more than happy to be a beta tester for the controller.

After looking over your thread I would also recommend as many as four pumps. One on each end and one or two along the back wall. Sanjay is currently using two pumps but also has a closed loop plumbed in.
