(Yes I'm posting this in the mantis forum too)

So I have conceded that the mantis shrimp is smarter than me. I can't catch this thing! I have tried the traps, spraying with seltzer water, and have torn down my LR twice and put it in buckets.

My question is what does it mean if I keep the thing? What, inverts, fish, coral are out of the question? Do they have to be kept totally alone? Will it kill things even if I feed it? How you doin?

Thanks in advance

they will kill pretty much anything. Doesnt matter the size of the fish for the most part...when they can punch at the same strength as a gun, theres' not much that will live if the thing decides its gonna go after it.

So fish, shrimp, crabs, and prolly even snails are not safe with a mantis. Bout the only thing that is are corals.

As to how to get it out...i'm not sure. But are you positive its a mantis and not just a pistol shrimp? They make the same noise but arent harmful. But if you're seeing fish/inverts dissapearing, then you'll know for sure its a mantis shrimp

They will kill everything, and an break glass too. Might take off your finger when it gets bigger too. They are extremely smart too!!!

It is important to vaccum regularly/daily when u start to use the advantage. It will help suck the eggs outta the carpet fibers.

Yeah thats what I was thinking....
Anyway Its going to be hard to keep anything in with the mantis. I know I always try and add a little cleaning crew now and again in my mantis tank and he just kills everything. Cracks shells open like eggs. As for fish Im sure they can catch them if they wanted to no problem. Theyre very smart and very quick. I was lucky and just removed the piece of LR he was hiding in. I have mine in a tank by himself along with Mushrooms and Zoanthids. He doesnt touch the coral at all, just things that move.

ya i'm thinking it was posted to the wrong thread :)

there's a video thats been around a few times of a mantis takin out an emerald crab or something like that that was like 4 times bigger. Just kept punchin the crap out of it till it broke the shell and it died lol. I'm thinking it is on google video...do a google vid. search for "mantis shrimp" and it should turn up.

thanks for the replies...esp the random egg thing

so even if the fish is bigger than the mantis it will kill it?

also is the glass thing true?

I can't believe how clever these things are...I've been in the room with the tank for a couple hours, and I just walked away...I hear the click click immediately.

yes the glass thing is somewhat true. Think about it....they can punch as hard as a .22 caliber gun (learned me that from discovery channel or somethin of that nature ;) ). Thats like sayin...ok...would you shoot a gun at your tank??? lol. It'd break IF they deside to hit it. But Its somewhat rare, but then again, it happens enough to where people worry bout it.
