Is this attachment worth it, does it really work? The ad says it increases the productivity of the skimmer by 20%.

Not worth it in a small tank, imo. I enjoyed using it because it kept the surface clear... but I eventually took it out just because it took up too much room in my 20g.

Not worth it because its so large. I ended up hanging mine on the back of my sump.

Did you have problems with microbubbles because you didn't use it?

I actually had more microbubble problems with it. They went away after a few weeks... but in the beginning the box was covered with microbubbles.

I have it and I like it. I had to drill a few holes so that I didn't risk running a dry pump, but other than that it's great. I didn't have a micro bubble problem before or after.

I attached mine by suction cups and left the 2 screws out so I didn't have to worry about running dry.
