Ever since i've removed my HOB filter in my 55g, ive noticed a lot of build up on the surface of the water. What ways are there to control this? My set up is just a 55g with a skimmer(no sump/fuge) Im looking for a inexpensive solution. Thanks.

does your skimmer work ok? W/ a functioning skimmer I am surprised that this would happen

I do have a powerhead aimed at the surface...I just took both of my powerheads out to clean them, and they were clogged with gunk and cheato. Thats probably why I was getting buildup on the surface. Not getting enough flow out of the PH.

Is the skimmer a HOB? If so you could probably use one solution to this ive read about . This invloves modifying a specimen container (http://www.petsolutions.com/Professional+Specimen+Containers-I-10810516-I-.aspx) by cutting the hanging bracket off of the top and cutting teeth in the container. Place the powerhead or pump inside the box in such a way that the teeth are above the water level. The scum gets sucked directly into the skimmer and boosts skimmate production.

you gotta have surface water moving as well, the power head facing up to agiate it some will take care of that problem for ya :)
