Dr. Farley,

As you most likely know and I recently found out, having samples tested using mass spectrometers is sort of pricey and time consuming. Let's say I wanted to make a test standard for alkalinity and calcium, how can I go about doing this? I made the refractometer solution and it was rather easy to do, so I was thinking that maybe Ca and alk aren't too much more difficult.

I have thought of several ways, but I'm not really sure they would work. One would be to use X amount of pickling lime in X amount of water. Agreed that we don't really know the moisture content of the lime, but I'm not looking for plus or minus one resolution. I have access to the same types of scales and measuring devices that you have, so I am able to take accurate readings of any substances required.

Thanks!!

Mods: I thought I put this in the chemistry forum. Please move it if it isn't too much trouble.
