Hey you guys, just thought I would share my ORA Blue Tortusa Story.
Working at a LFS I get to see alloooottttt of corals come in from all over the world.
However, I also get to see people take their aquariums down and bring their corals into our store.
One customer in particular I can remember.
He had been having alot of problems with his tank for one reason or another, having issues with algae and moveing his aquariu, also moveing houses and just decided to take the aquarium down... (he was one of these who didnt listen to anything anyone suggested to help)...
So the day came and he brought a few brown, dieing nasty corals in, most of which where not salvagable.
One in particular I remember... it was a 3inch or so long peice of Acro.. brown and slightly necrosing at the time... I treated it, doctored it up and moved it into one of our SPS displays...
Within a couple of weeks to a month or two it colored up and was blue with green polyps.. at this time I wasnt into SPS a whole lot, but I was very interested to see this acro make it.
After a while of several customers noticeing it, I decided I wanted a peice and simply fragged about an inch off of one branch.
At this time it was very thick, with not much growth.. very plain, and the only color visible was a dark blue and just a hint of green.
I brought it home, mounted it to a small peice of rock and left it alone for a WHILE!!!...
about a Month later it started resuming growth and looked well.. This was under four 110watt VHO's ( two 50/50's and two actinics from UVL )
at this time I was still unsure of its species.
a couple of months later when It had grown to be about 2.5 inches or so I was starting to be able to tell that this might be a tortusa... a month later and yes, I was sure. after researching here of course! :)
Now its 5 inches tall and about as wide.. nice brilliant blue and purple with green nearer to the main base.. a wonderful tort it has been...
Several months ago I fragged a small portion, about a forth inch off and glued it to a BAF disk I had... today it is about 1.5 inches and incrusting ever so nicely... with beautiful colors, nicer than the mother colony I believe some days....
Today I JUST MADE THE CONNECTION that.. the original peice at my work is ORA due to the unique plug it is on!... which means my original frag is a F2 generation and the DISK frag is an F3 generation ORA FRAG!
Pretty cool I thought and just wanted to share!
LOL, YOU GUYS PAY like 50 bucks for ORA frags and I got 3 generations out of it for FREE!!! haha loven' reefen'
