I've just finished setting up my 180g reef. I've got 3-250 metal halides and 2-5' double toobed T-5's that gradually come on during mid day and go off for the night.
Now that I've enclose my canopy the heat is going to 84 F and rising? What should be the minimum and maximum temps before I have my fans on the canopy kick in????

I would try to keep my temp from exceeding 84. And try to keep the temp swing within two or three degrees. HTH

I feel ideal is 75-79. Corals like it coo, fish only can rise to mid 80s. JD

I try to keep mine at 82 degrees. Sometimes if it's cold at night it goes to 80.

86.2 in the sump. I'm running 2x65 watt PCs over a 75 temporarily. Beat that!
Sounds like you might need a chiller glen, I do too.

My tank is regulated by an Aquacontroller and fluxuates from 79.5 - 80.5. I love that thing.

running 79-82. Sometimes my x-10 module is a bit whacky so I don't run it with aquacontroller anymore. I hope this titanium heater last.
summer time, I hit 86

I usually prefer a temperature between 73-75 F (23-24°C). Most corals look better than at higher temperatures. I have no heater in the tank, because the T5 bulbs produce a lot of warmth.
In the summer I have to use a AM Titan 250 cooler to prevent an increasing temperature above 80 F (27°C).
Especially gorgonians and clavularia viridis don't like high temperatures.

80 F is what i keep mine at, i need a ACPROIII :D though!
I run at 80 so if there is a drop or spike due to some unforeseen event, it doesn't reach lethality in either direction. Generally I'm 79-80.
If you're running too hot, get all lids and covers off. My life improved immensely when I discovered a covered part of the sump I'd assumed was unitary construction was actually lidded, and I could take that bit off. Heat dropped, stabilized, and I'm a one degree swing with no controller, just a 250 w heater in a 52g.

I run mine in summer 83-84 and winter 78-80.
I have read some articles that said that it is quite ok to run your tank at very high temperature 86+ as long as you have very good flow and surface movement as the warmer the water, the less oxygen it can hold.

Nothing. Heaters to keep the temp up to 78.

75.6 with an Aquacontroller, it'll fluctuate up to about 77.5 - 78 with the all the halides on.
