Im filling my upgrade system tomorrow, but not sure what salt to start with.

Ive had problems with my current set up, partly size, lack of sump, effective filtration etc

Cant say if salt brand has been a factor, but I'd like to know what everybody uses and what is thought to be the best.

Cheers

Pete

There is no 'best' salt mix. I use IO, but suppliment the make-up with calcium. Many have positive results with IO, Reef Crystals, Coralife, etc...

I second Instant Ocean, I print out the page off the petsmart.com site bring that to the store and they honor the web sites price. saves me a few bucks :)

IO for me too.

I have had pretty good luck with it so far. A lot of public aquariums us IO as well. They make a lot of salt.

......and you might get lucky and score a cheap towel with the logo on it at the bottom of the bucket, if they still do that.

Have you ever considered using natural sea-water?

most of the salts out there are pretty good as long as you dose additional suppliments at required levels. the only thing i would recommend against is natural sea water and really really cheap cheap salts ie: vibrant-reef.

for my own tanks, i use coralife w/o problems. reefs or fo. the only thing i do different between reef and fo's is that i test for thing slike calcium, mag, stro, moly, etc etc, and dose acocrdingly. and on the fo i only check for ph and kh.

I used oceanic but i am going to use Reef Crystals in my new 75g.
It's pretty much the same as instant ocean with more trace elements

There are quite a few good salts to choose from. Personally, I use either IO or Reef Crystals. I'd probably do a mix of RC (for Alk) and Oceanic (for Calcium), but that would require too much effort.

I used Instant Ocean but just switched it up by going with Seachem reef mix. So far so good:-) If you look at the trace elements that are in it, its really really close to natural sea water.

I've been using red sea. IMHO any good name brand have decent salt. I've been dosing B-Ionic anyway.for me, salt is the last thing for me to worry

I also meant to say in my original post that I think the water source is just as important...RO+/- DI only. No water straight from the tap if you're going to have a reef.

I've used Coralife with no issues, but I'm currently using IO. I use only RO/DI water from my Kent 60gpd 4stage unit.

Why would you reccommend againt natural sea-water, synthetic salt is after all only an attempt at natural sea-water. Sea water contains nearly every element known to man and synthetic does not.

If you can get clean natural sea-water it is better than synthetic.

Have you run your tank on natural sea-water? I have been runing mine on NSW for nearly 2 years now and have had absalutely no problems!

I have been a longtime fan of Reef Crystals.

Great so far, it smells different but mixes the same as IO.
I've only done one water change since the switch, none of the corals reacted in a negative way to the change.
The salt is in a plastis bag inside the bucket, so you can seal some of the mositure out. The price may be a little cheaper, depending on where you buy it from.
