you could try shrimp or maybe a pair of clowns in a 20 and raise the babies in the 10

i have a breeding pari of clowns in a 10 and they go fine, the biggest difference is that the filter is 1000gal + so the water quality stays fine.

you would need a super way to process the high food loads, skimmers denitrafiers algae filters, otherwise it would turn yucky fast.

peppermint shrimps would be easy to maintain and breed in such a small tank.

my royal grammas also breed fine in a 10 as do orchid dottybacks.
again keep an eye on food loads.

You could breed some of the smaller gobies.

I would try a few neon gobies or green-banded gobies.

You could try some of the Priolepis sp. also.

But has anyone successfully REARED Priolepis yet?

My vote would be for Gobies or Clowns, or *maybe* a pair of Bangaii Cardinals?

I think Bangaii's could be maintained in a 10, and with their large offspring you could utilize a breeder net to rear a few. FWIW, out of all the fish mentioned, I think everything except Bangaii Cardinalfish would require a 2nd tank for larval rearing, so IF a pair of Bangaiis would spawn in a 10, that would be the way to go. I'll leave this to the Bangaii experts, as my male won't hold eggs past a couple days (has been going like this for the past year+ since they started breeding) - it's either a tank size thing or too many other fish or just a bum pair. Considering how inactive they generally are, and how good the pair is towards each other, I personally believe you could get spawns in a 10...success is another level.

FWIW,

Matt

clowns
GB gobies
neon gobies
someone here bred sexy shrimp
peppermints

maybe bangaii cardinals
thats all i know that might breed in a 10g

If you just want to see them spawn and watch the eggs, any of these will do. If you are serious about raising the offspring, you will need more tanks.

I agree entirely with that except for Bangaii's - the reason I bring them up is that with the babies being so large, and ready to go straight onto BBS, a breeder net could be placed in the same 10 gallon with the broodstock.

Of course, I think the biggest issue with 1 lone 10 gallon, trying to spawn and rear Bangaii's in the same tank, would be that water quality would require a fair amount of work to maintain (i.e. 5 gallon water changes once or twice per week might be necessary, especially if feedings are heavy to condition the cardinals).

Just my $0.02, YMMV,

Actually, that will work for clownfish. Ocellaris, the best kind.

One of you guys said you only had one tank. Guess that wasn't you.

If you have as little as 2 10 gallon tanks at your disposal, you could rear limited quantities of ANYTHING listed above in this thread!

Yes, Priolepis have been raised with success at F. I. T. The reason I said Priolepis sp. is because they are very hearty, breed often, and do not require much space. Ten gallon is perfect for them. I believe the question was about what will breed in a ten gallon tank, not what what set up this person has as far as raising larvae. He did not ask about raising larval fish.

Breeding Implies at least attempting to rear ;)

F.I.T.? Do you have any online resources regarding the rearing of Priolepis? I've found plenty of documentation regarding spawning (I have a pair of Rusties that have spawned multiple times) but nothing on actually successfully rearing them, let alone at a hobbysist vs. aquaculture or research level...

Harder to raise than most of the species already mentioned. Luis got a few (2-3?) Chrysiptera's through metamorphosis. I gotta say, having spent a year failing at rearing mandarins, and having a tough time with Greenbanded Gobies and Apogon leptacanthus (only made 45 days), stick with the easy, "forgiving" ones first, specifically Bangaii's or Clownfish, maybe Neon Gobies or Dottybacks...those seem to be the big 4 that most folks can accomplish....gotta go...the mandarins are courting ;)
