View Full Version : too much live rock???

I just received my order of 40lbs of live rock for my"32g" tank. I did not realize that having a Finnex M-tank, the 32 included the sump and filter area. This brings the actual fish and rock area to roughly somewhere around 24g. It looks to me like this is too much rock. There is only a 3-4" at most of sand in front of the rock. Is this enough? Do I need to remove the rock and make smaller pieces of it?

Looks fine to me, the rule that some follow is 3 to 5 Lbs of rock for each gallon.
The more rock the more filtration, I think you have a good amount and would leave it.

I don't think so. Many people put two pounds of rock per gallon. It's your own personal preference though. It wouldn't kill you to provide a little bit more space for the fish to swim. Whatever you think is best, and good luck.

Looks good from here, I would get it off the side glass is all. (makes it easier to keep glass clean on sides)

If you build it up a little more you'll find it doesn't look like so much -- right now you're only using about half of the vertical space. I have 125lbs in my 90g, arranged into two piles; the overall shape is a little like the letter M, with one side lower than the other. The half covering the overflow has a point that's almost touching the surface. I've seen open-topped tanks with suspended lights that have rockwork actually breaking the water surface, it's an interesting look.

Great..Thx again. I just needed the confirmation. Looks like I will definately need a powerhead also. There really doesn't seem to be too much flow in there.

Look very nice, but I agree about keeping the rock off the glass cause it is so much eaiser.

I like lots of rock in my tank, I also have about 125 lbs in my 90 gallon. Yours looks great to me. Another way to make sure there is plenty of swimming room is to make sure the rock only goes through the middle of the tank. that way the fish can swim all around. Also make little openings fo the fish to swim through. Good luck!

Huh? I've always heard 1-2lbs per gallon. I couldn't fit 625lbs of rock in my 125 if I tried (Unless it was granite).

You look like you have enough room for that rock. It all really depends on what you put in there for fish. I have about 200lbs of rock in my 125 and I am thinking of removing about 25 lbs to make more room for fish to swim. The more rock = more filtration theory, IMO, is a little off. Yes, you will have more surface area and holes which means more bacteria. But, you will have worse circulation through the rockwork if you add too much which will cause dead spots. These dead spots, IMO, are worse for your tank than having too little rock.

the only problem i think you will come across is when you start buying coral and you dont have room to put them in the tank, i ran in to that issue, so keep it in mind, you have to plan ahead. you might find a huge beautiful colony at a great price, but you might have to take some rock out to fit it in, which can be irritating once you have stuff growing on them

It may not look it but I have about 150lbs of live rock in my 75.

Probably too many hits. Oh well.

People need to note here that different types of live rock have different densities. The problem with our "pounds per gallon" rule is that the more dense your rock is, the more rock you need. The real quantity we should be using is surface area per gallon... it's just that it's a bear to measure the surface area of a piece of rock.

Just remember that the heavier the rock feels, the more of it you need.

Can't see your pics but in general I think people put too much rock in a new tank. If it's half full of rock where are you going to put the corals ?

I had no problems whatsoever. He answered all my emails right away and the rock looked great when it got here. I would definately recommend him.
