I am currently in the upgrade process. I am upgrading to a 40 gallon breeder. Right now I have a person building a custom oak stand for me, and he can build me a matching canopy if I would like.
My question is whether or not I should go for a canopy and build my lights inside of it, or if I should buy a light fixture like this which allows the water's surface more access to fresh air

Just looking for suggestions since I have never used a canopy design before.
Thanks in advance.

I keep an open top system. I have a currnet Sunpod fixture. The manufacturer states that these fixtures are not to be installed in a canopy. Fixtures like this are designed to be placed directly on top of the tank. The canopy will trap heat and provide inadequate ventilation.

thanks for your input mile sq. reefer,
Maybe I should have started a poll. I always assumed that an open top system was the best idea since it doesn't trap heat and CO2. I was wondering if there were any benefits to keeping a canopy.

I like a canopy with a closed top. I just prefer the look. If you were to go that route, you would use a retrofit lighting setup that mounts inside the canopy.

So thats what retrofit means. Thanks! I always wondered and never put two and two together.

Can someone tell me the negatives of having a canopy, and the negatives of having open top?

I also prefer a canopy. It hides a lot of the equipment and allows retro fit lighting to be used this saves $$$$.

Using a canopy you should use a fan or two fans to draw the hot air out.

You are better off blowing cool air in. Moist salty air will kill a fan in no time.
