I saw this Discovery channel show about the artificial islands they are building off the coat of Dubai. They are apparently adding over 2000 miles of coastline. It said they are also building the largest artificial coral reefs ever with giant metal foundations & DC current running through them. The show said the corals are multiplying & building reef structure at an astonishing rate. Does anyone know if this true?

Did someone say "layer cake reef balls".

How about "electrified balls". http://www.reefhq.com.au/bts/electro.html

I hope it doesn't turn out like the artificial reef they did off Fla. made from used auto tires...now that they are starting to come loose, the cleanup costs will be in the billions

They are inducing an electrical current through the metal frames and it induces the animals to grow at an accelerate rate.

The islands are called " Palm" islands and you can not understand the scope of them on TV or in pictures, you have to see this to believe it...

It is good, but not for our reef tanks........we would need tons of calcium and buffer to cope with the precipitation that takes place on the metal frame.......!

I am just thinking it is cool that such large reefs are being built!
