hey guys.. im not new to this site and know that these q's have been discussed before so stay with me on this one :) anyway i was wondering what your opinions were as far as the best hang on skimmer for a tank around 55 gallons, the skimmer i have now just isn't cutting it, so what do u think? also i wanted to know what u think of the magnetic holders for the mj's the suction cups just aren't doing it anymore.. hahaha

I've used BakPak, CoraLife, and Remora Pro hang-on skimmers. I guess I like the CoraLife the best, although there's no objective data on skimmer performance.

For the money I would get a Octopus hang on skimmer here's a link for them:

Remora Pro or Coralife Super Skimmer if you're on a budget. Or get the Deltec MCE600.

ok, cool... the coralife looks like a good value, so can anyone tell me how much clearance i need between my tank and wall for the different models? also, anyone try those magnetic holders for the maxijets?

magnetic holders are great. suction cups are not a question of IF they will fall it is WHEN.

cool, yea.. my suction cups are starting to fail on me.. hahaha, anyone know what clearance ill need for the coralife? if u could tell me what model you have and how much room u need between the tank and wall that'd be great..

I have the 65g model, and I'd leave 10" or so, although less is probably fine.

hmm, yea i don't think i have that much room... could u measure exactly how much space i would need, i need to find out how close i could "cut it" before i buy one.. if anyone has a larger model or knows if the size of the tube is the same just longer could u let me know on the larger sizes too, thanks in advance for the info

It looks like mine sticks out about 6" from the tank. You'll want a bit more space at least.

hmm.. i don't think i have that much room.. should have looked into this a bit more when i set my tank up originally.. ill just have to buy a more expensive thinner model.. what would be a good option?

A BakPak is thinner, I think. I guess I could measure that, too.

that'd be great, do u have one? how does it work/compare to other skimmers.. right now i have a red sea prizm skimmer..

I don't think it's all that great a skimmer, but there's no objective data. I have two BakPaks in operation. Call me a slow learner. They are slim, though.

you should be fine with 5". im pretty sure thats EXACTLY what my coralife super skimmer 65 is. its DAMN TIGHT between my wall and 55 tank, but all i have is 5". i also run a remora pro (someone gave it to me...), i think i get more skimmate outta the coralife though, plus they're cheaper! THOUGH i believe the remora is skinnier if this is an issue. happy reefing (:

oh yea, if u only leave 5" you wont need suction cups, i PROMISE
:p
