hello.. I've been looking into getting couple of frags of non-indo lords but would like to see some more eye candy from you guys...

please don't be shy with your pics... ;)

Do not do it Marvin! They are addictive! I recently started with my first couple of Non Indos. I got the Pink Sparkle from Jendub (Very Nice) and a Purple / Red / Green from The Cultivated Reef. It is fairly new but is coloring up and I think it will be nice. As soon as my camera is functional I will take some PICS.

Here's a couple. I believe the first one is from Japan. The damage was caused by it falling into a Chalice. Sorry about the bad photos, I'm still trying to figure out my new camera!

I'm really not sure. I've been wondering that myself. The polyps are fairly large. Not the size of a regular acan lords though.

Randy,

Back in September 2004 I received 10 frags of Lords. Most likely all were Non-Indo. I say most likely since the guy never advertised as to where they came from.

After about 6 months, half of the frags I got peeled off their skeleton. 3 of them had doubled in size in that time, and 2 had neither grown, or shrunk. Only one of my frags ended up growing very well, and it's still in debate whether that one is a Micro or a lord.

That is my experience with them. Maybe others have had better luck. I know of a bunch of people that got them from the same source as me, and had similar results.

It really is too bad. Some of the nicest color morphs are corals that will never grow.

I guess I'll dig up some old pictures.

I also added the two dark green lords to my collection around this time.

A month later the bottom cracked on my newly setup 150 gallon tank.

So the collection of Acans were sent off to my 40 breeder with PC lighting. They looked great under this light.

December 2004

BTW, all the larger colonies in the last pic are Indo Acanthastrea, and all were grown from 3-5 polyp frags.

The green morph really looked great under this lighting, and started to grow.

You can see a couple new polyps on the top left of the piece.

This is the one that grew the best. I still think it's a Micro

http://users.adelphia.net/~randyolszewski/images/Jan05micro.jpg
http://users.adelphia.net/~randyolszewski/images/Jan05microredgreen.jpg

The odd thing about the Micro is that is was solid bright red when I got it, with just some white marks in it.

Micro is above red arrow. My blue morph is started to get burnt by the 400 watt halide.

This was the last of the Non-Indo frags to peel off the skeleton. This pic is from around September 2005.

http://users.adelphia.net/~randyolszewski/images/GreenGrayAcanth.jpg

I lost it around December 05

By October 05, Non-Indo lords were phasing out, and Micromussa where squeezing in.

that red with green center lord is sweet...Do you still have it?

The red with Green center has been struggling lately. It was growing strong the first year. But then the coralline algae covered the frag rock, and the Acan looked like it was having trouble growing over the coralline. So it started growing a hanging foot. It was like a polyp growing out and hanging over the coralline. I tried to cut a couple of them off, but never got any to live myself. I did send one off so maybe he had better luck.

My piece is still alive, but it does not look nearly as good anymore. My tank overall has not been looking good. I think I'd be too embarrassed to show current pics.

When I was talking about the polyps peeling off, it was polyp bail out. I had full polyps floating around my frag tank. I tried to glue them down, but without a skeleton they just slimmed off the glue. I had one floating around for a few months.

Sorry, I have no non-indo eye candy to contribute, but a random theory...

I read somewhere most non-indo lords were from Japan. I also read the waters there are cooler than most areas our corals are commonly collected from. Is it possible that these systems are run at a higher temp than these corals prefer? What temp are you guys keeping your systems at that had polyp bail out?

Hehe, I have to sneak in a little gratuitous harrassment as well, for Randy, I have never dreamed of asking you to put them on the glass...Just sure glad you did! :love1:

My buddy had the same thing happen to a colony of his Japanese acans. It was during the summer when the temp of his tank got in the mid 80's. By the time he got a chiller polyps started to detach. He lost just about the whole colony. He recently gave the rest to me. There were 4 polyps left, but when I put them in my tank 2 more polyps came off. At least the 2 biggest polyps stayed.

I got them in September and lost my first one to bail out in January. The other followed over the next few months.

I have to work hard to keep my tanks warm in the winter. I keep my sump in the basement, on the cement floor, so I have almost 2000 watts of heaters maintaining the temps between 77-78 F.

Not sure on the salinity. I try to keep in between 1.025-1.027

A quick question for all of you that are having good luck with color and growth. I have a 58 RR tank set up primarily for acans - will a 175 MH 14k with 4 (75 watt) 24" vho's be enough light for them? I also hope to get a few micros and put them near the top.

Daryl ... they literaly have 50X the stuff that they list on their site. When I was there last it took me 2 hours to pick out the two lord polyps I ended up buying (will be picking up soon and will share a pic then). It is a shame that you are in CA!

Rub it in Adam, rub it in:).

I know I talked to Elizabeth last week. She said how they have alot, but they only sell some here and there, otherwise they'd run out. Sounds like they rotate morphs around to let them grow out some.

Yah man your lucky, I know how it is. You look and look and just don't know what to get.

Maybe I'll have to take a vacation to chicago, catch a Bulls game, buy some corals and come back.:)

Veery nice Marv. Where did those come from?

a local guy broke down his LPS dominated reef and went SPS so he got rid of these guys... if I remember correctly, he had gotten them from Captive Reef when they had their 10 for $1000 a while while back...

thank goodness a friend babysat some of them and I just happen to drop by and I was like... WOWOWEE.. then, he let pick which ones I like and those the ones I came up with... there's more but I didn't have enough... I hope to get another morph if he's still got it.. :D

Thanks again..

just depends on the morph for me -
I have one that the adult polyps are a terquoise (sp?) color - I really like them - not a color seen very often. I have only a small frag. and it is not an adult polyp so it hasn't colored up yet. I will post pics as the color develops a little more.

Yes they are expensive. Unless you catch a good deal. Usually for $100 or more a polyp they're really nice ones. Like the first 2 were $200 a polyp. And the last ones were more like $50-$75 I forgot by now.

Those first 2 are so incredible - How do the colors hold up? Have you had them long or do you still have them. I am a little gun shy to shell out the cash for some of the really crazy pastel colored lords for fear that they will fade over time. Anyone have any that have remained in their tanksfor any length of time??

All Delight
05/01/2007, 01:21 PM
Salt - Sadly the first one bailed out. So I lost that one. The second one is doing ok. Some days its better then others. I've only had them for about 3 months. The colors are holding up, no problem. However, there hasn't been any new polyps yet.

I know what you mean about being guy shy. It's hard to spend alot. Fortunately I had a wonderful beginning. Where the pieces I bought did great. So that gave me the confidence to move forward. I know others who weren't for fortunate. Either they died or whatever. But it made it hard for them to spend that kind of money again.

I would say do what you feel comfortable with. :)

andrewkw
05/01/2007, 03:32 PM
i'm not buying frags. I'm buying full colonies or at least quarter colonies. The one I posted earlier I had about 65 polyps of it. I still have about 40 of them.

if you want to move to canada i'll sell you frags :)
