Hey I am planning a new tank and wanting to diy a stand. I can either weld a square tubing stand, or build a wooden one. What do you recommend? Does anyone have pics of theirs? If it's metal I will hang wood on the outside, but how? Any info on diy stand would be great!

Thanks,
Kyle

Thanks for the help yall. Now another question what If I built it with metal. How could I skin it so the wood could be taken off?

kpk, you can use pin clips (we used them on offroad race cars to hold body panels on) to attach a wood skin to the metal stand. Easy on/off. You can also make the wood part 3 sided, and slip it around your metal stand.

Thanks Ken for the help and the pm. If I do it that way how can i fix the corners to look good? And if I do it all one piece wouldn't it be really weak?

It all depends on what you want. I have seen some pretty nice stands with boxed in corners that stand out that I'm sure are very strong. The idea I told you about will use 8" pilings with a 45° notch cut out for the corners. I also plan on pinning the wood to the metal stand.

Man if I only had pics! I am just learning this skinning stuff etc. I have build hoods, a metal frame stand with mahogony screwed on the outside, but I just don't like that. Anyway to get pics or is there instructions on the internet?

The link that marino420td gave you shows what I'm talking about for boxed in corners, that design should be very strong for a slip on cover. I'll see if I can find some pictures of the pins I'm talking about.

As far as instructions, you won't find anything better than you'll find here, equal maybe, but some of the stuff you find here is top notch.

Well I really just meant on the skinning. The metal stand shouldn't be too hard, but the skinning is just a little confusing. The pins would be great!

OK, here are some pins, check the flush mount ones:
http://www.jergensinc.com/pins.aspx?source=search_engine

And another complete line of pins, check the quick release ball lock pins:
http://www.fixtureworks.net/

Depending on how you use them, you may need the pin and a receptacle (base).

Oh cool I see. So you just drill a hole in the wood through to a receptacle. When you say flush is it the ones that say recessed? Maybe I'm blind, but can't see where it says flush? That would make for an easy on and off, and seems like it would be stronger than a solid piece. I will check out the thread on marinos stand for a better look a the corners.

Yes, recessed. It depends on your design, there are many options to chose from.

Welp I guess I can scratch this idea. I just found a brand new cherry oak oceanic stand for cheap so I guess I will go with that.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Darn, and I was tagging along because I'm trying to do the same thing! Will start on the metal frame with 1x2 steel tubing in two weeks time. I have no clue how to do the wood part!

Sorry Jesse I just couldn't help. I would have spent probably double than what I paid for the stand. Good luck!
