I have a question about lowering the temp on my tank, today when I can home the temp was 84.3 the heater was off, the only thing running was the pumps and lights. This is a new tank so to make sure everything was working right I unplugged the heater and put a thermometer to check if the dig thermometer was working right sure enough it was and is. do you think I need to run a fan it help keep it cool ?

A fan should help. Also, you might need to fix the setting on your heater. You could put it in a small container of water with a pump, and adjust it until the thermometer says the temperature is being maintained properly. Ignore the temperature scale on the heater. In my experience, they aren't accurate.

IMO, a fan is an easy, inexpensive answer to a heat problem. It may not be the final solution, but one of the first simple things I would try.

Thanks the temp should be around 70 right? today when I looked at the tank it had borwn stuff on the rocks not sure if the lights are on to long or if it is part of the cycle, it has been up and running for a week and a half, I want to take my time and make sure everything is right. I was running the lights from 12pm to 12am do you think that is to long?

I target 82 F as the base temperature for my reef. 12 hours is a bit long. I run mine for maybe 9-10 hours. The brown film is a normal part of a new tank, so I wouldn't worry about it.

That article discusses all the water parameters.

well what do you want to keep? some fish will tolerate a higher temp. id say 78 is ideal. and 82 generally a bit high....

I had the same problem, I bought a small quiet fan for the top of my tank to blow directly on the water and it cooled it down significantly, 3-5 degrees I would say.

I have an Ebo-Jager heater, which is pretty good. However like they said above, the temp scale isn't aligned with actuality, it's off by about 6 degrees. I have to put it on 71 for it to warm the tank to 77.
