View Full Version : Question for Robby/computer savvy people

I'm realizing that with my setup I will have to run a 30' cable to use my Ethernet Module because my computer is upstairs from my tank/support equipment.

First off I don't use a router because I'm a single computer household. My PC interface was done by running a 30" serial extension and then a serial/USB adapter into the computer. My computer does use a DSL modem to access the internet.

My question is how should I go the 30' from the Ethernet Module to my computer and what do I plug into when I get it there?

Should I run it all USB with a booster or should I go USB to Serial and back to USB or maybe Cat 5 with adapters or maybe I need to get a router?

And finally, since I don't have a router--what should I plug into at the end: one of my computer USB ports like the PC interface does?

Is it possible to plug directly into a DSL modem (although my modem--Speedstream 5100 doesn't have any extra ports and uses a RJ something jacks)? It would be nice to bypass the PC since I put it in standby when I'm not using it but I imagine the Ethernet Module doesn't work that way. Also my internet service uses adynamic addressing and I saw the section in the Ethernet Module that deals with that.

Naturally I would like to keep my stuff as secure as possible and keep costs down as much as possible in implementing whatever I end up doing.

Much thanks in advance to all who help a computer/networking challenged Reefer out!

James

And, for me, with multiple computers and a wireless network, what is the best way? No attempt to pirate the thread, just a similar problem.

James I had a lovely one page reply typed up when Internet Explorer just decided to lock up!! :(
I am going to give the short version and hope I cover all bases.

The Ethernet Module has 3 connections.

1) The USB Port (Connect that to the Powerbar
2) The Ethernet Port (Connect that to your Router or Switch)
3) Power Supply (Plug that into a wall plug, not your powerbar)

I would keep the Ethernet module near to the Powerbar and connect it with the 6ft USB cable provided.

Run 30ft of Ethernet Cable (Cat 5) from the Ethernet Module to your Router Upstairs.

If your DSL router does not have a free port you are going to have to buy a "Ethernet Switch" from Bestbuy or Compusa. Thats about $20-$30 for a 6 port Switch. There are many brands to choose from, you can get a Cnet brand switch for the least amount of money. Also buy a 3FT Ethernet jumper cable with ends on it. You will need it later.

Next disconnect the PC Ethernet cable where it plugs into your DSL router and connect it Into Plug#2 on the switch you purchased.

Use the 3Ft Jumper cable and plug it into port#1 on the Switch and the other End into the Empty port you created on the DSL Router.

Plug the Ethernet cable from Downstairs into Port#3 on the Switch. Connect the other End into the Ethernet module downstairs.

Connect the Ethernet USB into the Powerbar USB and Plug in the Ethernets Power Adapter and "Power her up":).

Upstairs Plug in the Switch and turn on the PC. When its booted up check the Ethernet switch make sure you see the three Light indicators for each of the used ports blinking Fast or steady ON that indicates that each of the 3 cables plugged in is making contact. Note: slow continuous blinking may indicate a problem with the wiring.

Next check that you can browse on the Internet. If all is done right you should be browsing perfectly.

Now fire up the Aquatronica PC software and go into the Ethernet section.
Set the DHCP = ON (since you say you have dynamic addressing)
speed = 100mbs
duplex = full

At this point I "Think" you should see an assigned IP show up in the settings. If you dont then exit wait a few minutes and rerun the Aquatronica software. Check again, if you get an adress like 192.169.1.3 or something else, just write it down.

Next setup your password, (I have not seen this section yet)

OK with that done you should be able to run internet explorer on the PC and go up to the address bar and type http://192.168.1.3 or whatever address it gave you. Hit enter and the Web page should come up.

setting up a domain name for use on the net is going to be needed if you want to use it over the Internet, also port forwarding in the DSL router will make it safer, but lets leave that for later. you can take a look at www.no-ip.com for more info.
Im Kinda tired now, so lets tackle that later

I think you just need to plug it into a wireless Ethernet Bridge.
Like this one.

http://www.amazon.com/Netgear-802-11g-Wireless-Ethernet-WGE101NA/dp/B0000A0VBK#moreAboutThisProduct

Dont know what kinda wireless hub you have, but go to there website and you should find a bridge for your hub. Just read a few reviews on the unit before purchasing it, Wireless can be one pain in the rump if your distance is too far or a compatability problem occurs.
