I have a 65g tank and I would really love to add an eel. The problem is I have open top, is this just asking for fish on the floor? Would egg crate over the top help any?

Is there any specie that is less prone to escaping?

the egg crate will help but you also have to secure it down so the eel can't push it off they are very strong. you must have a covered tank ...........

Any hole that they can fit through they will go through.

I agree with zoebeaglezoe. No choice here, or you WILL end up with dried up eel.

I agree with ALL of these posters. Must be a covered tank!!

And one more thing, I actually had an eel snake down the inside of an outlet pipe of a canister filter!! Something to think about.

It all depends. I kept my uniform reef eel in an open top. The tanks lip didn't let him get out.

Sorry to be the pessimist, but it's only a matter of time.

I was upgrading my 55 gallon to a 92 corner and I didn't see my zebra eel for a couple days...

Found him on the floor behind the tank...

Don't take a chance... Cover up!!!

Just to add..... (this one will break your heart)

I spent a lot of money on a beautiful Tessalata. He was well over 16" in length, definitely one of the coolest eels I ever owned. Anyways, I was still living at home and I had a 75 gallon tank dedicated just to him and one other fairly large Moray. I went on vacation for a week and my mom basically closed the door to the room and never looked in (she hated the eels). I got home, opened the door and there was my eel shriveled up like a dried out banana peel on the floor. I had used only egg crate to cover the tank......

I had my Brazilian Dragon jump out. But eggcrate will work as long as you have something to hold it down with.
